Every now and then humankind comes across a song so iconic that the only proper way to sing it is to yell the lyrics until everyone within an arm’s distance is rendered deaf. With recent news of The Killers’ classic angst anthem Mr. Brightside not leaving the UK charts since it first came out in 2004, we thought we’d put together a short list of iconic songs over the years. All aboard the nostalgia train, here’s 10 songs you’ve probably memorized by heart:
Mr. Brightside by The Killers
We figured there was no better song to start this list with than this gem from way back 2003 (just let that sink in for a bit). It doesn’t matter where you are, once this song starts playing, everyone collectively loses their shit. This song literally holds the fabric of humankind together. I LOVE YOU BRANDON FLOWERS!!!
Baby One More Time by Britney Spears
Before there was Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Selena Gomez or Rihanna, there was the one and only Britney Jean Spears. Her schoolgirl outfit for her Baby One More Time music video will forever be burned in the collective conscious of everyone who was lucky enough to be alive during her prime. Christina w h o?
Wonderwall by Oasis
Fun fact: Frontman Liam Gallagher reportedly hates the song and says it makes him sick every time he has to sing it. That, and probably because that’s the only song from Oasis most people are actually familiar with. Anyway, here’s Wonderwall.
Wannabe by The Spice Girls
Because nothing says girl power like platform boots and synchronized dancing with your girlfriends in a fancy mansion. 18 years later and I still want to be a Spice Girl. Baby Spice was the shit. Anybody relate?
Ignition (Remix) by R. Kelly
You know it’s live when everyone’s five drinks in and the DJ plays this classic party tune. It’s so good, you can almost forget that R. Kelly is actually trash.
A Thousand Miles by Vanessa Carlton
I think we can all thank Terry Crews for blessing us with this iconic movie anthem.
Hey Ya by Outkast
Ironically the happiest and saddest song that ever hit the charts, thanks to its infectious hook. Shoutout to Andre 3000 for trolling millions of people into shaking their polaroid photos when you’re actually not supposed to do that.
Hollaback Girl by Gwen Stefani
Remember when Gwen Stefani taught the entire human race how to spell “bananas” and made cargo pants look cool?
All Star by Smash Mouth
With all the Shrek memes (and occasional Shooting Stars mashup videos) circulating on the Internet, it’s impossible not to know this 2000 classic. GET OUT OF MY SWAMP!!!!!
Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen
Let’s all forget for one minute that some people only found out about this song from Suicide Squad. Unless you try to sing the vocals, the backup vocals AND the instruments, you’re not doing it right.
She Will Be Loved by Maroon 5
Lowkey the first daddy issues anthem before Lana del Rey became its posterchild. I don’t care what anybody says, Maroon 5’s Songs About Jane was the band at their peak music-wise. Also, Adam Levine in a sultry music video. Need I say more?
