The nominees for the 2018 Grammys have been announced, and we’re glad that, finally, hip-hop is getting more recognition. The genre has always had a… shall we say, ~complicated~ relationship with this storied institution of popular music, so it’s great that the Grammys are finally doing something about diversity.
And leading the pack of nominees this year is, fittingly enough, a living legend of hip-hop—Jay-Z, whose album, 4:44, was nominated for seven categories. Excited as we may be, though, there ~is~ something suspicious about all of this. Beyoncé’s brilliant Lemonade walked away with fewer awards than it was supposed to, losing out to Adele’s 25. It was such an upset that Adele even texted Queen Bey after, to acknowledge that Lemonade deserved to win Album of the Year.
Yeah, none of us were bothered by that ~at all~.
So in light of that, it makes a lot of sense that 4:44 would rake in the nominations. Which begs the question—is the Grammy committee going to let Jay-Z win Album of the Year??
That’s not to imply that this is the sole reason 4:44 got nominated, but it might have been a significant factor in the decision. We don’t wanna think so, but it would make a lot of sense—Beyoncé was snubbed, her husband released an album similar in nature to Lemonade, so why not feature it prominently and let it win to make up for it?
You know what, even if that turns out to be the case, 4:44 still deserves all the accolades it got. It’s a solid album with solid tunes that asks all the right questions. It showcases Jay-Z at his most vulnerable, as he owns up to his faults and even subtly hints at having indeed cheated on Beyoncé (something that was confirmed recently in an interview, to the surprise of no one). It’s a testament to a long career, and to a man who has survived hurdle after hurdle to make it to where he is today.
No matter what happens, I can’t imagine Hov will be fazed. He’s made it through worse. What about you, do you think Jay-Z deserves to win Album of the Year? Let us know in the comments below!
