One of the cornerstones of being a functional adult is mastering the subtle art of packing smart. In a perfect world, packing should be a simple task: you take a bunch of your clothes, put them in your bag and call it a day. But when you’re rummaging through the endless abyss that is your closet, choosing what to bring on a trip can go on for hours (especially if you take 10 minute breaks for every 3 things you pack). To save you some time, here are some packing hacks you can totally use the next time you’re going out of town:
1. Select your most versatile pieces
Depending on the duration of your trip and baggage allowance, consider planning your outfits ahead of time to help you choose which pieces to bring and which ones to leave. Picking pieces you can mix and match with your bottoms lets you come up with a variety of different outfits and can free up some space in your luggage. If you’re worried about having to repeat outfits, we’ll let you in on a little secret: no one cares.
2. Go easy on the footwear
As much as /ESCAPE encourages being extra, you do ~not~ need to pack 8 pairs of shoes for a 3-day beach trip. Instead, opt for a neutral pair of gladiator sandals, flats or some chic white sneakers instead. Also, don’t forget to pack a pair of flip flops—they can double as hotel house shoes and also look great at the beach!
3. Just roll with it
One of the easiest ways to save space in your bag? Learn to roll. Rolling your clothes and placing them side by side gives you tons of room to work with, which might even allow you to squeeze in an extra pair of shoes. Avoid bringing clothes with thick fabrics and knits (also because they take forever to air dry) and opt for cotton blends or lightweight cotton. If you have to bring something heavy, wear it instead.
4. Smaller is better
When you’re too preoccupied trying to figure out which outfits to bring, it can be easy to forget you need to pack toiletries too. Unless you’re planning to go full festival hippie and stink up the beach, invest in buying travel-sized bottles and pouches for your shower essentials, toiletries and makeup as early as now. Bag organizers work too!
5. Don’t forget to accessorize
Never take your accessories for granted, especially when you’re travelling. Not only do they look hella chic, but accessories like scarves, hats and belts can help change up your look when you’ve already worn the same outfit. Accessories can also add a much-needed pop of color to your versatile pieces, so packing them is always a win-win.
